A Blue Alert is issued when a law enforcement officer is killed or seriously injured in the line of duty and the suspect is still at large. The purpose of a Blue Alert is to quickly disseminate information to the public in order to help locate and apprehend the suspect.
In North Carolina, the Blue Alert system is activated by the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. The alert is sent out via a variety of communication channels, including television, radio, and social media, to inform the public about the situation and provide descriptions of the suspect and any vehicles involved.
Blue Alerts are relatively new, with the first one being issued in Texas in 2008. Since then, many states, including North Carolina, have implemented their own Blue Alert systems to help protect law enforcement officers and bring suspects to justice.
